About this course



Botany covers a wide range of scientific disciplines concerned with the study of plants, algae and fungi, including structure, growth, physiology, reproduction, metabolism, development, diseases, chemical properties, and evolutionary relationships between taxonomic groups. Botany began with early human efforts to identify edible, medicinal and poisonous plants, making it one of the oldest sciences. The study of plants is vital because they are a fundamental part of life on Earth, which generates the oxygen, food, fibers, fuel and medicine that allow humans and other life forms to exist. The Botany programs strongly emphasize field experience and hands-on laboratory training with locally important plants, their environment, historical and present uses, as well as the unique aspects of plant evolution and ecology.

Botany at JUW

Department of Botany is one of the earliest established departments of JUW. The laboratories are well equipped to impart education and research facilities according to the syllabi recommended by higher education commission. The faculty members are actively engaged in different researches. The department is committed to broad-based botanical training that focuses on developing an understanding of crop and agricultural science. The department also uses new approaches and current technologies. It has faculty in physiology, anatomy, ecology, systematic, and population and evolutionary biology. Research programs focus on plant physiology, marine biology, ecology, and plant anatomy.
