What Is Chemistry?

Chemistry is a wide-ranging science concerned with the synthesis, structures, dynamics, properties and transformations of all types of materials – organic, inorganic and biological.

Chemists are a constant source of innovation. It is hard to imagine any product introduced in recent times that did not require the creative efforts of a chemist at some stage. Chemistry also underpins the conceptual framework and methodology of biochemistry and molecular medicine, and is at the heart of many major industrial activities.

In particular chemistry has played a vital role in shaping the lives of human souls. Whether we consider chemistry to be hard, abstract, too mathematical, it is a fact that intentionally and unintentionally all of us do chemistry.


Chemistry at JUW

Chemistry department at JUW is a vibrant and focused department. It is nascent but trying to mature through derives for better teaching and research activities along with extracurricular efforts to promote young ladies of Pakistan as professional chemist. We look forward to find our graduates confident and agile. We undertake to provide a conducive environment for such girls who want to continue their education in chemistry, delivered in a place which is not co-educational.

The undergraduate course lasts four years, wherein the fourth year’s (second semester) is being devoted exclusively to research – a distinctive, long-standing feature of Chemistry department.



As the central scientific subject, Chemistry provides an excellent opportunity for the development of students, critical faculties and intellect, and also instills a variety of important transferable skills that will serve her well whatever she deserve to be her subsequent choice of career. Chemistry is applied in many fields including agriculture, astronomy, animal science, geology, medicines, applied health technology, fire science, biology, microbiology, physiology, molecular biology and material sciences and that new avenue for chemistry open every day as the world moves ahead, and hence the career openings. Chemistry is divided into Analytical chemistry, Applied chemistry, Environment chemistry, Industrial chemistry, Inorganic chemistry, Organic chemistry, Physical chemistry, Biochemistry and Geochemistry. Career opportunities in all spheres of life are thus available to chemistry department.
