Jinnah University for Women was founded in the year 1990 with Microbiology as one of its major department. Within years the Department of Microbiology has emerged as one of the most popular and demanding department among students with a high number of enrolments throughout in all batches.
It comprises 20 highly qualified faculty members serving in their specialized field of computational and molecular biology, applied and food microbiology, virology and clinical microbiology. The department is offering specialization BS 4th year level in Clinical Microbiology, Food Microbiology and Molecular Biology.
Among its various achievements it collaborates with American Society for Microbiology (ASM). The department has ASM liaison office which is well equipped with computer and digital library facility. The Department has seminar library. It has well structured and state of the art labs specified for conducting routine and molecular biology lab for research work , The equipments includes Gel Electrophoresis unit both for protein and DNA analysis, PCR Machines, Autoclaves, Nano drop, shakers, inverted Microscopes, transilluminator Microscopes, Shaking Incubators, Biological Safety Cabinets, Centrifuges, and Incubators etc.
The Department has founded a microbiology society JUW that is fully managed by the students, where they are actively involved in organizing seminars, awareness lectures, workshops conducted by personals related to the field of medical microbiology and public health, applied microbiology, Computational biology etc.
The research programs for M. Phil. and Ph.D. degrees cover various areas of microbiology including; Molecular Microbiology, Industrial Microbiology, Applied Microbiology, Medical Microbiology, Mycology, Virology and Immunology.
Vision of Microbiology Department is to produce highly qualified and competent individuals in all the selected area of Microbiology, to develop and maintain a strong and supportive research program to complement our national needs and to rise as center of excellence and information and knowledge in the all fields of Microbiology and also to develop centre of excellence for training in Microbiology.
The Department of Microbiology is committed to excellence in research, teaching and mentoring, and increasing the diversity of our faculty and student bodies. Our enduring research mission is to address central questions in biology relevant to human and animal disease, agriculture, the environment, and industry and to solve those using innovative, interdisciplinary experimental approaches in microbial and non-microbial systems. It is also to prepare B.S. M.S. and Ph.D. with in-depth knowledge and research skills for professional careers in Microbiology.
